Program Notes
Como un cielo caído by Michael Matthews was written between November 2005 and May 2006, and grew out of a request by Alejandro Escuer to create a new piece for the Onix Ensemble. I had known Alejandro since 2000, and had heard the ensemble several times, both in performance in Mexico and on recordings. It was a joy to write for them.
There are two principal contrasting musical ideas, one very rhythmic and pulsing, the other slow and mournful.
The title of the work is from a poem by Octavio Paz:
Entre montañas áridas
las aguas prisioneras
reposan, centellean,
como un cielo caído.
Octavio Paz – Lago
Between arid mountains
the imprisoned waters
rest, sparkle,
like a fallen sky.
