Program Notes
It is raining gently with light was commissioned by GroundSwell and premiered on November 23, 2021. The title is drawn from a poem by Canadian writer Dennis Cooley, whose work often weaves the natural world with memory and emotion.
Written for clarinet/bass clarinet, violin, and piano, It is raining gently with light unfolds in a language of quiet intensities and subtle motion. The music moves through translucent textures and suspended phrases, echoing the poem’s evocation of light, silence, and shifting atmosphere. The three instruments trace parallel lines and gentle divergences—sometimes overlapping in stillness, sometimes pressing forward in fragile momentum.
The world premiere featured Cathy Wood (clarinet/bass clarinet), Kerry DuWors (violin), and Madeline Hildebrand (piano), whose interpretations helped shape the sound and spirit of the work.
