Program Notes
Septet by Canadian composer Michael Matthews was commissioned by ensemble mosaik with financial support from the Canada Council for the Arts. Composed for seven virtuoso performers, the work draws on their distinct musical voices to shape its evolving character.
The world premiere of Septet by Michael Matthews took place in Calgary on February 8, 2017, performed by members of ensemble mosaik:
-
Bettina Junge – flute
-
Simon Strasser – oboe
-
Christian Vogel – clarinet and bass clarinet
-
Martin Losert – alto saxophone
-
Chatschatur Kanajan – violin
-
Mathis Mayr – cello
-
Ernst Surberg – piano
With its unique instrumentation, Michael Matthews’ Septet explores shifting textures, layered gestures, and the interplay between intricate lines and resonant silences. The music unfolds in contrasting episodes—turbulence and stillness, density and openness. Winds, strings, and piano blend and diverge in vivid combinations, evoking both chamber intimacy and orchestral richness. Each instrument takes its turn at the foreground, shaping the expressive arc of the ensemble’s collective voice.
