Reviews – Michael Matthews
Michael Matthews, a contemporary classical composer, has received significant acclaim for his works, known for their intricate structures and emotive depth. Born in Gander, Newfoundland, in 1950, Matthews’s musical journey took him across various countries during his childhood, eventually leading him to study music in the United States under notable composers like Aurelio de la Vega and Larry Austin. He earned a Ph.D. from the University of North Texas College of Music (Navona Records).
Matthews has had a prolific career, marked by numerous performances and recordings. His recent work, “Bloody Jack,” a song cycle based on poems by Dennis Cooley, has garnered attention for its haunting harmonies and powerful storytelling. This piece, performed by Dawn Bruch-Wiens and Laura Loewen, explores the dark tale of John Krafchenko, a notorious Hungarian immigrant and outlaw in Canada (Jazz Jazz) (Presto Music).
In addition to his compositions, Matthews has been an influential educator and active in the Canadian music scene. He co-founded the contemporary music ensemble Thira and the new music series GroundSwell in Winnipeg. His contributions have been recognized with several awards, including a Major Arts Grant from the Manitoba Arts Council and a residency at the Rockefeller Foundation’s Bellagio Center (Navona Records) (AllMusic).
