Michael Matthews – Photographer
In addition to my work as a composer I am active as a photographer. My book Gibbous Moon, a collaboration with Canadian poet Dennis Cooley is available from At Bay Press. The book is a collection of abstract photography and poetry.
As a composer I am deeply immersed in colours, sound elements and proportions and am always trying to create new combinations and then bring them into the right structural and emotional relationships. I also use these skills and techniques visually in my photographic work. The things that touch me on my travels and adventures include architectural details, striking or unusual colour contrasts and night landscapes. More recently I have immersed myself in macro photography.
I create photographs to observe and reflect upon visual aesthetic sensations. This is especially true of my abstract images, which stem both from familiar and unusual subject matter.

J’utilise également ces compétences et ces techniques visuellement dans mon travail photographique. Les choses qui me touchent lors de mes voyages et de mes aventures sont les détails architecturaux, les contrastes de couleurs frappants ou inhabituels et les paysages nocturnes. Plus récemment, je me suis plongée dans la macrophotographie.
Je crée des photographies pour observer et réfléchir à des sensations visuelles esthétiques. C’est particulièrement vrai pour mes images abstraites, qui s’inspirent de sujets familiers ou inhabituels.

Als Komponist bin ich tief in Farben, Klangelementen und Proportionen versunken und versuche immer, neue Kombinationen zu schaffen und sie dann in die richtigen strukturellen und emotionalen Beziehungen zu bringen. Diese Fähigkeiten und Techniken setze ich auch visuell in meiner fotografischen Arbeit ein. Zu den Dingen, die mich auf meinen Reisen und Abenteuern berühren, gehören architektonische Details, auffällige oder ungewöhnliche Farbkontraste und Nachtlandschaften. In jüngster Zeit habe ich mich mit Makrofotografie beschäftigt.
Ich erstelle Fotos, um visuelle ästhetische Empfindungen zu beobachten und darüber nachzudenken. Dies gilt insbesondere für meine abstrakten Bilder, die sowohl von vertrauten als auch von ungewöhnlichen Motiven stammen.
